Domain Names - Choose Wisely

The domain name you choose for your web site can mean the difference between success and failure on the Internet, unless of course, your company happens to be a household name, with a trademarked identity.

For most businesses however, that isn't the case.

Many simply register their company name as a domain name. The problem with that is that most of the world won't already have heard of your company and therefore, you'll have to rely on other forms of marketing in order to get visitors to your web site.

The alternative is to buy a generic name for your site, that most people would recognise with a product or service that you are selling. (If you aren't selling, your company shouldn't have a web site!)

It doesn't matter if you have a large company or a small company, you have an equal chance of registering a great domain name for your particular market as anyone else, providing it hasn't already been regsitered by somebody else.

The most popular type of domain name is a .com, as that was the first and is still the most recognised internationally. If you don't want an international domain, you can stick to one of the other TLD's (Top Level Domains), such as .co.uk if you're based in the UK, or one of the many others that are available.

Costs of registering domain names are very low, with a .co.uk name costing as little as £6 for 2 years with somebody like 123Reg.co.uk (our preferred UK registrar). Even .com domain names can be inexpensive - as little as $6 per year.

Generic names are very powerful, especially if you can combine a popular search term in the name, for the service that you are offering. In the examples above, "asbestos testing", "new cars" and "private villa" are all common search terms and many Internet savvy users will simply type in those names directly into their Internet browser, without ever going to a search engine.
